“Four generations of our family have appreciated the expert care, personal attention, and valued support of Central Medical.” –Carol Emerson, CMC Patient
In the late 1940s, a large population of Hawaii residents—many of them Japanese Americans—worked for sugar plantations and received medical care in those closed systems. Seeing a need for Japanese-speaking medical clinics, Dr. Isami Umaki (OB/GYN) and Dr. Thomas Fujiwara (Internist) established CMC in 1949, making it the first Japanese-speaking clinic on Oahu. In 1956, they were joined by Dr. Goonzo Yamashita (Pediatrician), enabling CMC to care for patients at all stages of life.
Today, CMC is one of the best primary care clinics in Honolulu, with consistently high rankings in quality care and patient satisfaction. True to its roots, CMC continues to offer comprehensive care for all stages of life, with many families who started with the founding doctors still attending the clinic.
